What is SEA LOVE?
As a Deaf artist, I require visual mediums to interpret and understand the world around me. When I get inspired, I execute my ideas through visuals. Thus, the word “Sea" which sounds exactly like "see," but obviously has different meanings. So when you hear (or see) Sea Love, know that the Sea is projecting two ideas.
I believe in the power of love. I have gained wisdom in the true meaning of love. It’s not just about feelings, it is an action. Love is what you commit to do even when you don’t feel like it. There is joy in it, a joy that I find to be supernatural. As it was once said, "Love is patient, love is kind, and it never fails." Yes, there is much more to that, but you get the idea. We see it in relationships, families, friendships, coworkers, strangers and even Mother Nature.
I’d like to give one profound example of what love does to our sea neighbors when there is a loss. In the summer of 2018, a female calf was born to J35, a member of the endangered Southern Resident Orcas pod. Unfortunately the calf died shorty after birth. The grief was so profound that the mother carried her dead calf for 17 days! It has been reported that other members in the pod helped the mother to carry the dead calf. Whales are known to grieve the loss of their love ones and this unusual incident shook the community in Washington and Canada. As you can see the whales were showing support and love as a community. Love is not just a human experience.
At SEA LOVE, our core values are to speak in love, walk in love, and be kind to one another. Help each other and be the light in this world. If you live by the sea, join a mermaid pod and improve the health of YOUR sea, YOUR coastline. If you are a tourist visiting a beach, as you walk pick up some of the trash you see on the beach. You may save a life that day. If you rarely go to places where the sky meets the sea, then at least skip the plastic straw or use a biodegradable straw instead. This small change when compounded can create a huge impact. The goal is to inspire the next generation to love their ocean and be kind to our sea neighbors.
My mermaid scales are designed with a deep love for the sea. Each has its own message instilled in them, a message to bring awareness.
